A free Photoshop alternative is useful only if it handles the work you need to finish. For a browser-based edit, I would start by evaluating Photopea. For desktop image manipulation, GIMP belongs on the shortlist. For drawing and painting, Krita is the more focused candidate. PhotoCraft is worth watching, but it needs an alpha-software test, not an automatic promotion into your production workflow.
Those are starting points based on the projects’ documented roles, not a hands-on speed or image-quality ranking. The quickest way to make a bad choice is to compare screenshots of toolbars and assume the files underneath behave the same way.
Which free Photoshop alternative fits your task?
- Resize, compose or make an occasional layered edit in a browser: evaluate Photopea.
- Retouch images or assemble desktop composites: evaluate GIMP.
- Paint illustrations with brushes and a pen: evaluate Krita.
- Explore a new Photoshop-style open-source project: test PhotoCraft with disposable files.
If your main job is developing hundreds of camera raw files and managing a photo library, that is a different comparison. Start with a photography workflow tool rather than expecting a layered image editor to replace every part of Lightroom.
Photopea: a practical browser starting point
Photopea is a browser-based editor for raster and vector work. Its documentation recommends a large screen, a mouse or stylus, and a keyboard for comfortable editing. Being able to open it on a phone does not make a complex layered document pleasant to edit there.
I would try it first when the immediate problem is a file someone sent me or an occasional graphic that does not justify a new desktop setup. Before committing, check the current free-use conditions and whether the features you need have separate limits. Do not confuse “runs in the browser” with “all possible services are included.”
GIMP: desktop image manipulation
GIMP is a free, open-source image editor for GNU/Linux, macOS and Windows. The project describes uses including photo retouching, image composition and graphic design.
That makes it a sensible candidate for someone whose work is primarily manipulating pixels: cleaning up an image, combining elements, adjusting a graphic and exporting it. Expect to learn its own workflow. A replacement does not have to imitate every Photoshop shortcut to be useful, but the learning time still belongs in your decision.
Test the files you receive and the files you must deliver. If a client needs a specific editable Photoshop document with particular effects intact, a visually correct PNG is not the same deliverable.
Krita: choose it for painting
Krita is a free, open-source creative application with multiple brush types, layers, drawing assistants and animation tools. Its emphasis makes it an especially relevant candidate for illustration and painting.
For this use, judge the work that occupies your hand all day: brush behavior, pen response, canvas navigation and exporting the finished artwork. A photo-retouching checklist alone would miss the point. Conversely, a good painting experience does not establish that every Photoshop business workflow is covered.
PhotoCraft: an experiment with a clear boundary
The PhotoCraft repository explicitly describes an early alpha with gaps that prevent it from replacing daily professional Photoshop work. Include it in an experiment if the project interests you. Keep the originals and your dependable editor available while testing.
I would not judge the whole established open-source ecosystem by one new project’s strengths or rough edges. GIMP and Krita solve their own problems. They are not merely temporary stand-ins for whatever clone is trending this week.
Run one useful comparison
- Choose a real example of your normal work and make a copy. Include the text, masks or effects that usually cause trouble.
- Write down the required result before opening the candidate. For example: change the headline, preserve editable layers and export a transparent image at the required size.
- Complete that exact task. Note anything you had to flatten, rebuild or work around.
- Save, close and reopen the editable document. Check the exported result separately.
- If someone else receives the file, ask them to check the deliverable in their actual application.
Measure the outcome rather than the novelty: did the file survive, did you finish the job, and would you willingly repeat the process next week? The best free option is the one that passes that test for your work. It does not need to win a universal ranking to earn a place on your computer. If switching also means ending a paid plan, check the Adobe cancellation guide before confirming a subscription change.
